First, you have to determine if your ATS is sensing all the exteriors, doors, hood, trunk, are all the locks working properly. GM pass key products fail for a number of reason, broken wires in key cylinder, OEM Radio removed, chip damage or missing , most times this can be fixed by inserting a resister between two wires to confuse the alarm. The root of the problem is most of the time a lot , the door lock actuators stop working it only takes one door not to work , this tells the alarm that it's being tampered with, this causes the no start situation and the aggravation you're having. That's the first thing, do all your door locks work like they should? Repair your door locks if you can financially , or use the resister. Tammy answered 3 years ago. My car has done this 3 times. Should crank right up its a 40 min process. Hope it works for y'all. Like I said that's for a Chevy LT every make has different code.

The first time the anti theft system malfunctioned I thought it was my fuel pump, starter, or out of gas. I know nothing about cars! After noticing my blinking theft system light, a quick googled search showed me how to reset the system. Last weekend my theft system light came on, but was not flashing and would just stay on. Nothing worked! I decided to let it be and took my husbands car. After a few hours of not trying, my husband went out and started messing with the power locks, and radio, put the key in the ignition and the damn thing started right up!! Again today this happened. I didn't notice the theft system light was on. Everyone said it was the fuel pump. He said it was the ignition switch and he replaced it. This was in June. Visited with my aunt and when I came to come back home this light was on! Once I got home I shut the car off and it started right away when I tried it. I was scared. It was a hairy trip home! Now it's parked but I'm afraid to go anywhere! I'm going to call the mechanic where I bought it and see what he has to say. Does this have anything to do with the Chevy Malibu recall I got a notice about? Lulu answered 3 years ago. More than likely it has to do with the recall. Of course, they finally confessed to the problem after how many of us have had the fuel pump replaced. Now my issue is that because of the factory installed alarm, that we did not know we had, the horn won't stop blaring. The last time I drove this car the horn started blowing as I made a left turn for no reason what so ever. I want to give my teenager the car but I am hesitant to do so. I had gotten a recall for my Malibu back in April or May, I believe. Wow, was I excited You know what the recall did??? They inserted a plastic plug into the plastic top of the car key! The plastic plug turned the oblong slit into a nice round hole that just fits a key ring. I don't about any of the rest of you, but when my car shuts off Never once has it jumped back to the ACC or off position! He assured me it would I am extremely disgusted! I paid for a new ignition control module and that still didn't work. It was the fing anti theft deal. If my Fiance didn't google it we would not have known. It fixed the problem. Luckily I wasn't far from home and have AAA! I took the car to the dealer for the recall key thing I'm still scared every time I drive it. I believe this was the problem with my Alero it kept shutting off when driving and nobody knew what was wrong with it. I got a lot of "it could be" but I am not in the financial position to be able to put money into "what ifs". I've dealt with this issue for at least 5 years now. Let it sit on acc until the light stops flashing, then turn it to the off position for two minutes, then it starts right up. Thing is, it's just dangerous if you need to leave in a hurry. I noticed that the problem started after my key fob died. I hope this will keep the problem from reoccurring. Fingers crossed. Fidelis62 answered 3 years ago. This is a known issue and can be referenced on numerous online sites, so there is no reason this should not be a recall issue. Mechanics will tell you it is the fuel pump, fuel lines, or the ignition, and you can spend a great deal of money without solving the issue. I do not want my teenage son stranded for something that gm knows about and should replace. I tried to start my car yesterday morning after having it only sit for an hour when the car would crank but not start. It seemed as if the car was not getting fuel and less than 3 weeks ago had a new fuel pump fixed on it because of this same issue. As I stated before, the car would crank but not start. I had it towed to the local chevy dealership and they were unable to find anything wrong with the car and had it starting and running every time they tried to diagnose the problem. After doing research online, it appears this is a common problem with chevy Malibu's as it deals with an error in the anti-theft device for the car and deals with the passlock system. This is an inconvenience for owners of chevy Malibu's and is such a common problem it needs to be fixed by the manufacturer or this vehicle. So when I started the car it wont start and the anti theft sign on the dash board keeps blinking. So I cant start the car and tried locking my car and unlocking and starting again still nothing. I checked the battery and the battery is fine and kept on trying to started it I can see the sign that says the car is locked. For no reason this happened, I came home that night and in the morning it didnt start. So it most likely is the ignition lock cylinder problem from my advise from my mechanic. I read online that it can turn off the car and have to wait an hour then start it back up and this is very dangerous problem to have if this security anti theft system fails out of no where. Also I checked my key for damage and still doesnt work. In the middle of driving the anti-theft system activates. The light for it comes on, my locks lock, and I cannot accelerate. This happened a few times over the course of a month and is now very frequent. I loose the ability to accelerate. This is very dangerous. It happens while on the interstate or when going slower. Once I also lost power steering. I have taken it to the dealership just to be told no codes were noted. From speaking to other Malibu owners this is all to frequent of an issue. Anti theft passlock system, chevy Malibu. Locked me out for 3 time and will not allow me to start my car. Now may loose my job, can not go to work for days now. While driving on the freeway, my car just shut off. I managed to put in in neutral and restart the car after a long attempt to do so. I ended up repeating the process again within a few minutes, but since we were so far from an exit we continued to drive slowly in the right lane until we reached an exit while leaving our hazard lights on..

Ive tried the methods. It shuts down completely. I jump it and its fine. My battery is fulky charged. Its a security shut down lock out. Jumping it has always worked. I can reprogram the key. But now its happening 1 time a month. The first time my car did it was after she borrowed it for the weekend. I believe she cranks too hard. Im also going to look for a recall or submit on to chevy since i see this is a common problem. Don answered 3 years ago. I have been very successful with this procedure. Luckiestpenny answered 3 years ago. Okay so theft-lock is a serious problem and has left me in a number of dangerous situations because of this "safety" feature. It was only in the models because it was obviously a terrible idea, but here's how you fix it: You try turning the car on, it hesitates and therefore doesn't turn over. You have just activated theftlock. This is important. Put it back in and without trying to turn the car over, put the key in the "on" position. The words Theft Lock will be blinking on the left side of your dash, if theft lock is activated. If it is not there or is solid, theft lock hasn't been activated and you don't have to worry about the rest of this. Don't do anything to your car during the above time. When the blinking has stopped, "Theft Lock" will be gone from your dash or solid, doesn't matter which. Curse the creators of this infernal machine, and pray for the day you can buy a different car. By the way, this has happened one or two times at an auto shop when they were fixing something else. Most mechanics don't know about Theft Lock and will just about break your car trying to fix it. I've also had this kill my battery overtime and in the short term. So if you have an old or weak battery, it's a good idea to manually shut off your lights when you leave the key in the car. And when it starts back up, be sure you run the car long enough for it to recharge the battery. Good Luck! Gina answered 3 years ago. Heads up people. Don't bother getting a ford to get around this anti theft bs. Happening with my mustang for a week now. My Malibu has been a great car, pretty cheap to fix, and the key would come out of the ignition after it was started. It was a "neat" trick where I could start the car and pull the key out, then I could lock the doors. But now the theft system light came on a few days ago and I was stranded until I could google how to reset it. The next business day I called my regular mechanic and he told me that the tumbler would be replaced with the recall. I should have done WAY more research. After sitting at the dealership for an hour and a half, I finally find out that they only put some little piece of plastic in the keyhole on the key. Probably took a whole 30 seconds for them to do it and it promptly fell out. What a joke of a "recall". The key can still be pulled out of the ignition and the theft light came on again. I put the resistor in the ignition circuit as described above. It worked fine for a couple months then started doing the same thing with not starting. Anybody else experience this and what did they do to fix again? I tried everything and my Malibu kept having the problem and it began happening closer and closer together! So I found a used car dealer and traded the car even up for a Ford Taurus. The Ford has some problems but after being quoted a price to fix the Malibu in the thousands replace computer and wiring I figured I got the better of the deal. Guy I bought car from couldn't hold in his elation at "taking advantage of an old lady" but I just smiled and took the Ford and papers to the DMV before the Malibu acted up. Ford has the check engine light on had it put on the machine and it came back as catalytic converter it needs tires and the battery died and needs replacing but I still think I got the better of the deal! What if you have a a car that you bought used and you later found out that the car did have a anti-theft device that was removed? Apparently, the original owner removed it and did not tell anyone that this car had an anti-theft device. I found this out when I was having a problem six years ago with the car not starting, I thought that it was the battery. That is when I found out that my car used to have an anti-theft device. They said that they knew because there were lights on under the dash, so the box or whatever they said was not removed. I told them that I never had an anti-theft on y car. I was stunned to hear this. I checked with the Saturn dealer, and gave them my VIN on the car. So, the previous owner had it installed somewhere. I got this car from a trusted mechanic, and he was always immaculate with his cars, and apparently, he did not know about this. Then a few months ago when the car did stall and I could not re-start it. I called AAA to have it towed, thinking that it was the battery or a mechanical. The AAA tow driver got it started, and thought it may be the fuel pump. AAA car care said that nothing showed in the diagnostics and the fuel pump was fine. They were able to get it started, and let me take it home, at no charge. I took it back two more times about the same problem about the car being hesitant when starting, and again, they found no problem. This time I decide to take the car somewhere else. When they went to start it to take it in their garage it would not start. They looked under the car, and saw that whatever the starter is connected is faulty. They were able to start the car, but it was hesitant. So, I got a new starter. That was two weeks ago. Now, over the last two days, my car started to do the same thing, hesitating when starting, so after I start the care, I need to accelerate to give it gas, so that it won't stall. So, that got me thinking about anti-theft devices. I would like to know if a person has an anti-theft removed from a car, will the car eventually have problems starting? I have Saturn SL2. This problem is the only real problem that I have had with this car. One of the indicator lights on my car does say security. I don't know if that is from the anti-theft device that was removed or it that is something else. Bob answered 3 years ago. There are various fixes that may or may not work, including getting copies of your key made and trying a different key, replacement of the sensor, and a common fix is to replace the ignition cylinder. You need to try looking at replacing the passlock sensor that reads the ignition cylinder's resistance code upon key insertion into the ignition switch. I basically had to wire in a transponder L module that would store and remember the resistance code so that it can feed that code to the IPC when the autostart system actuates the starter remotely with no key in the igntion to do so. With your problem in the absence of auto start and with you using the factory key, you either have a bad ignition switch or there is a short or something going on in the lock cylinder I would say. That is how I would start diagnosis. My parents have a 96 Chev Lumina with the same Passlock system. When I installed their remote start, I built a resistor network into the remote start to bypass this system. You could permantly install it to bypass it and it's cheap. Our friend just purchase a Chevy Malibu and the theft light blinks and it won't start. Since she is a single mother I wish to help her fix it and would like some ideas. I don't want her to have to pay for something she doesn't need. Your suggestions would be greatly appreciated! I have a Malibu. Is it possible to just disable the problematic theft system. Occasionally it won't because of the theft system. I've checked sites that offer the module to install if you're adding a remote starter but is there a way to install the module without the remote starter? Or can I get a new ignition switch and install it myself or does the dealer have to do that so the system gets sync'ed with the resistance of the new switch? I just hate to spend several hundred dollars on something as simple as an ignition switch. There has to be a way, right? I ended up repeating the process again within a few minutes, but since we were so far from an exit we continued to drive slowly in the right lane until we reached an exit while leaving our hazard lights on. The car has now continued to seemingly randomly repeat the process at odd times with significant intervals between each episode. I have also had a tremendous amount of trouble with the vehicles anti theft system prohibiting the car from starting. Now the car has also begun to struggle to start at random times. Sometimes the car starts just fine, at others, it struggles or takes several long attempts to start, if it even will. The battery, alternator, and fuses are all good. The check engine light comes on sometimes and when it is the code just reads a communication error which seems useless to the garage. I am not comfortable with my pregnant wife driving the car. I am concerned that it will breakdown, not start, or worse, shut off while she is on the freeway and then not be able to control the car without power steering. The contact owns a Chevrolet Malibu. The contact stated when attempting to park, the engine stalled as the anti-theft warning indicator illuminated. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic, where the pass lock sensor and the ignition switch were replaced..

I just bought it 2 days ago, only a few times have i successfully unlocked the car where the alarm didnt go off. Every other time, it never fails, it sounds the alarm as soon as i get the door open. There has been a few different things ive tried.

I've been told a new fuel pump, new ignition switch, and multiple other pricey "fixes" I don't want to be mislead, as I know it has to do with the anti theft system. I know nothing about I was told that if I attempt to replace Can the theft system be bypassed or will having the proper key solve the theft system issue? I have a copy, which came from a Chevy dealership, My Chevrolet Malibu is cranking, but not starting. I had a it towed to a repair shop, who ran a test on the fuel system, battery, alternator, but nothing was found. I researched it and found that the anti-theft system can stop your vehicle from starting. It seems that the anti-theft system locked after I was sitting in my car during lunch listening to the radio for an hour. I turned the key twice to reset the radio after it timed out. As I left work to go home it wouldn't start. After sitting overnight at the repair shop, it started. Here I am a week later and its doing it again, but now I'm getting a signal with a locked car symbol on the dash. It seems that that anti-system is locked again. I cannot find out how to reset it. I was not in the vehicle playing the radio at all that day. However, this issue happened to me a year after I got the car too after washing the car and listening to the radio. I forgot about that incident until now. I am seeing over complaints about this same issue. There were some cars recalled, but mine does not have one associated with it. It gm recalled it on some, they should recall it on all, it's the same issue. I would like to know if they plan to do this, because I'm seeing and hearing they are no fixes at the repair shop. They try to fix it with expensive options, but the issue comes back. I read that some people car stalled when the anti-theft system locked. I don't want this to happen to me and my family. Thank goodness mine was parked each time. I took the car in for the ignition recall and all the dealership did was charge me for a replacement key. The key was working fine for a few days and now the ignition is hard to turn over and the car has actually not turning over and the anti theft lights came on while the car was at a car wash getting detailed and I had to tow the car. When I called the irving texas dealership I kept getting asked the same questions and then no one returned my call. The car had been working fine and was stopped when all this happened. I was trying to remote start my Malibu in the morning but it didn't start. Instead my car was doing a clicking noise and my headlights where blinking. I checked on line and have read that Chevrolet owners have been having the same problem. I've done my best to take care of my car and its not an old car with alot of miles on it. I've already had to pay to change a sensor on it and now this before something really bad happens. I'm regretting having my dad cosign for my Malibu. Hi there, I'm a Canadian university student with a Chev Malibu that has that: I personally find that more dangerous than my car being stolen. I"m wondering what the simplest way is of disabling this thing, I don't have the money to replace the ignition column, nor do anything extensive, I just want it disabled period. Any assistance would be greatfully welcomed. Thank you very much Karyn. I tried the fix suggested on on this or another forum which was to get some electrical contact cleaner from Radio Shack. I sprayed it into the ignition cylinder and inserted the key about 50 times. So far so good-it was kicking in theft system about every third start attempt and I've had 10 good starts since I did it. I'd give it a try; it's only about 9 bucks for the cleaner. Good evening, I've read through the posts, I have a similar problem. I have a Malibu and I've had to take it to dealership to replace ignition switch twice in 2 years. It's looking to do it again. I am intrigued by the post to use an electronic cleaner to clean ignition and the key. Anybody else tried with success or failure? I'm driving along and then the theft system light comes on. Could this be a start in the system or the computer? These questions are discussed on another forum and a Modification to Disable Passlock is explained in detail with photos. Ellen answered 4 years ago.

AAA car care said that nothing showed in the diagnostics and the fuel pump was fine. They were able to get it started, and let me take it home, at no charge. I took it back two more times about the same problem about the car being hesitant when starting, and again, they found no problem.
